This large vase is glazed with a glaze inspired by traditional Japanese Tenmoku glazes. The deep black and brown tones on the exterior come from iron that I collect in southern Utah and process myself for use in my glaze formulations. The interior is finished with one of my original white glazes, made without added colorants to achieve a clean, smooth surface.
The two glazes are layered around the rim, where they melt and interact during firing. This creates the flowing transition you see as the darker glaze moves into the lighter interior.
The vase is made from a 50/50 blend of stoneware and porcelain. It was wheel-thrown and trimmed on the wheel, then set aside to dry slowly for up to ten weeks. Once fully dry, it was bisque fired to 1728°F, then glazed and glaze-fired to 2232°F.
Dimensions: 8 inches tall, 8-inch belly, 5-inch rim. (dimension are approximate)
